Why Your Gut Health Matters with Dr. Tyrrell Jenkins

In this episode…

Today, we discuss how a healthy gut contributes to overall wellness, affecting energy levels, stress levels, and mental health. Our conversation highlights the connection between nutrition, hormones, and sleep. Dr. Tyrell Jenkins, affectionately known as Dr. TJ, is a medical professional with a background in internal medicine.

He is based in New York City, where he currently practices primary care in a private practice. He is passionate about building relationships with his patients and aims to provide medical knowledge and promote wellness through his company, Krave Wellness. His goal is to help people improve their quality of life and community through education and the exploration of amazing wellness destinations.

The gut, often called the "second brain," plays a role in producing serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences mood. Imbalances in the gut can lead to fatigue, stress, and even mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

We also touched on the connection between gut health and hormones, particularly in relation to menopause and how the foods we eat can impact our hormone levels. Dr. TJ shared insights from his e-book, The IBS Reset, which provides comprehensive information and innovative approaches to managing irritable bowel syndrome.

It is important to have an individualized approach to gut health, based on your unique needs. That includes taking probiotics (check the episode highlights), and prebiotics, keeping a food symptom journal, and considering specific vitamin supplements.

Digestive issues can have far-reaching effects, such as fatigue and numbness, and this conversation highlights the connection between gut health and mental health, the immune system, and thyroid function. Dr. TJ shared his journey into focusing on gut health, driven by a desire to make a positive impact on people's lives beyond medical procedures.
